Rankin’s Rubbish

INGRID DEUSS will debut “Rankin’s Rubbish” in Antwerpen, an exhibition inspired in part by Irving Penn’s still life images of cigarette butts and other ephemera. Rankin’s new work is an examination of the often-overlooked beauty inherent in the things we throw away, finding value in what we so happily abandon.

“Rankin’s Rubbish” is set to officially open on May 3rd – June 16th

Too saucy for Penguin, Rankin’s image goes to the dogs!

‘Thanks, but no Thanks’

Too saucy for Penguin, Rankin’s nude image of Tuuli was banned – ironically like the book that it was originally shot to cover, Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

The image is now set to be auctioned for Battersea Dogs Home as part of a sale of rejected and unwanted artworks helping to raise money for the charity.

The images can be seen at the Beach Gallery, 20 Cheshire Street, E2 from 1-6 May. On the final day an auction will be held.

A conversation between Rankin & Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst: Hey Man, What’s the crack?
Rankin: We’ve got to do this conversation for the Myths book. Do you remember when we first met? That first shot we did? I was a big fan of your work and then I asked you to hold a knife against your cheek. I remember you pushing it in so hard that it cut you? (laughs)
DH: Yeah, I remember it, we both used to cane it pretty hard in those days. I’d probably had no fucking sleep and couldn’t feel pain.
(…)
What made you wanna do this myths and monsters project?

R: It was you, man! You excited me about it. You had this whole thing in your head.
(…)

DH: Don’t you know crime don’t pay?
R: The price of my work might go up though?
DH: Yeah, but you wouldn’t be around to enjoy it.
(…)
R: Does any of your work attempt to take the piss out of the art industry and the art market? Or just out of the world in general.
DH: Nah, not really, I think taking the piss is negative – the art market is not really happening enough for me to want to say anything about it.
But the world in general? Sure. Earth is my favourite planet.
Art is about life, the world is about money – what about your industry?
R: That’s what I was trying to say I suppose, but at least when I look at some of your work, I do think about life. Not just about buying a fucking dress!
DH: I think you can find art in the most unlikely places, even when buying a dress. At least you get to work with bare ladies mostly and not dead animals. (laughs)
R: Yeah, look at Irving Penn. He sold loads of dresses but I think he was a true artist!
What made you want to be an artist in the first place?
DH: I just always drew and painted, I enjoyed it more than anything else. It took me years to work out I could get paid for doing something I enjoyed though.
(…)
R: A friend of ours once said to me that the best piece of advice you’d given him was that ‘money is just a key to open doors’. Could you explain that a bit?
DH: Yeah, it’s like language. It’s something that helps you to communicate. I guess it’s easier for me to say that now I’ve got some. I think a lot of people fuck up because money somehow becomes the goal instead of a tool to help to achieve your goal – money should never be the goal.

The Hunger is a biannual magazine. It launched in November 2011, The Hunger was born from Rankin’s desire to celebrate the innate drive that we all possess and that, with a bit of creativity, can be used as an impetus for cultural change.

20 years after Dazed & Confused was founded, and 10 years after the birth of AnOther, The Hunger provides creative beings with a new platform for uncompromised self-expression, innovation and discovery. Working with recognised and emerging talents in the arts, fashion and editorial, The Hunger seeks out cultural progression and distinction. Each issue of the magazine features both a male and female cover.

Hungertv.com was launched simultaneously with the magazine. The ground-breaking video-based website features exclusive in-depth interviews and fashion films with those in the magazine, as well as regular stories on other stars, updates from The Hunger team, and previews of content for upcoming issues.

New Rankin and Swatch collaboration

Although Rankin and Swatch have a rich history working together, this new project is both unique and unexpected, as we see the launch of a new line of watches Rankin has designed for the Swatch and Art Collection.

‘When Swatch approached me to design a range of watches, I was immensely flattered. Like so many people, my first watch was a Swatch – it’s an iconic brand that holds such a special place in people’s hearts. So it was an exciting challenge to be given the opportunity to design a Swatch watch myself’ Rankin

There are eight new designs, three of which are sold individually, and a collectable limited edition set of 5 other designs, presented in their own special packaging. Rankin chose to use a selection of his Eyescapes for the range, which depict eyes in extreme close-up:

I had many ideas for designs, but ultimately I wanted something that was simple and impactful, that represented something meaningful to me. I also wanted the watches to be fun and playful. Eyes are my favourite part of the body and getting the best out of them, are my stock-in-trade as a portrait photographer. Rankin
