Rankin’s Rubbish

03.05.12 | 6:43

INGRID DEUSS will debut “Rankin’s Rubbish” in Antwerpen, an exhibition inspired in part by Irving Penn’s still life images of cigarette butts and other ephemera. Rankin’s new work is an examination of the often-overlooked beauty inherent in the things we throw away, finding value in what we so happily abandon.

“Rankin’s Rubbish” is set to officially open on May 3rd – June 16th

Too Saucy for Penguin, Rankin’s image goes to the dogs!

01.05.12 | 12:06

‘Thanks, but no Thanks’

Too saucy for Penguin, Rankin’s nude image of Tuuli was banned – ironically like the book that it was originally shot to cover, Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

The image is now set to be auctioned for Battersea Dogs Home as part of a sale of rejected and unwanted artworks helping to raise money for the charity.

The images can be seen at the Beach Gallery, 20 Cheshire Street, E2 from 1-6 May. On the final day an auction will be held.

A conversation between Rankin & Damien Hirst

18.04.12 | 9:27

Damien Hirst: Hey Man, What’s the crack?
Rankin: We’ve got to do this conversation for the Myths book. Do you remember when we first met? That first shot we did? I was a big fan of your work and then I asked you to hold a knife against your cheek. I remember you pushing it in so hard that it cut you? (laughs)
DH: Yeah, I remember it, we both used to cane it pretty hard in those days. I’d probably had no fucking sleep and couldn’t feel pain.
(…)
What made you wanna do this myths and monsters project?

R: It was you, man! You excited me about it. You had this whole thing in your head.
(…)

DH: Don’t you know crime don’t pay?
R: The price of my work might go up though?
DH: Yeah, but you wouldn’t be around to enjoy it.
(…)
R: Does any of your work attempt to take the piss out of the art industry and the art market? Or just out of the world in general.
DH: Nah, not really, I think taking the piss is negative – the art market is not really happening enough for me to want to say anything about it.
But the world in general? Sure. Earth is my favourite planet.
Art is about life, the world is about money – what about your industry?
R: That’s what I was trying to say I suppose, but at least when I look at some of your work, I do think about life. Not just about buying a fucking dress!
DH: I think you can find art in the most unlikely places, even when buying a dress. At least you get to work with bare ladies mostly and not dead animals. (laughs)
R: Yeah, look at Irving Penn. He sold loads of dresses but I think he was a true artist!
What made you want to be an artist in the first place?
DH: I just always drew and painted, I enjoyed it more than anything else. It took me years to work out I could get paid for doing something I enjoyed though.
(…)
R: A friend of ours once said to me that the best piece of advice you’d given him was that ‘money is just a key to open doors’. Could you explain that a bit?
DH: Yeah, it’s like language. It’s something that helps you to communicate. I guess it’s easier for me to say that now I’ve got some. I think a lot of people fuck up because money somehow becomes the goal instead of a tool to help to achieve your goal – money should never be the goal.
